Tempe, AZ “ There were plenty of firsts at Sun Devil Stadium on Thursday night in the home opener against Weber State. Along with all the new names and jersey numbers, some ASU players found the end zone for the first time.
As expected the Sun Devils put the Wildcats away early, and many newcomers gained valuable experience on the night.
Here’s our Top-10 highlights from Game #1 of the 2014 season
1 – Redshirt Junior wide receiver Gary Chambers scored the first touchdown of the season on an 8 yard pass across the middle from Taylor Kelly. It was Chambers first career ASU catch and touchdown.
2 – Linebacker Salamo Fiso had several big time hits in the first quarter that put a stop to Weber State drives. Look for Fiso to continue to anchor the defense and have a big season.
3 – Jaelen Strong pulled in 7 catches for 89 yards IN THE FIRST QUARTER. Strong finished the game with 10 catches for 146 yards.
4 – With 13:50 left in the second quarter, the Sun Devil defense put up the brick wall and stopped Weber State on fourth and goal from the one yard line. It was a big moment for the young and inexperienced ASU defense.
5 – Gary Chambers hauls in another big reception at the end of the first half, this time for 38 yards down to the one yard line.
6 – On the following play, true freshman Kalen Ballage hammered it in for his first Sun Devil score. Ballage got plenty of playing time, 12 carries in all.

7 – With 10:46 left in the third quarter, D.J. Foster took a hit, made a 360 spin move and took off down the sidelines for a 57 yard touchdown run, the longest of his Sun Devil career. Standing in the end zone after the score, Foster threw the same pitchfork pose that€™s on the 2014 ASU football schedule poster. D.J finished the night with 15 carries for 147 yards and 3 touchdowns along with 4 receptions for 26 yards.
8 – Mike Bercovici got significant playing time in the second half. With 5 minutes left in the third quarter, he threw his first Sun Devil touchdown pass on a 15 yard strike to Ellis Jefferson. It was also the first career TD reception for Jefferson.
9 – Kalen Ballage is going to be a stud. He got plenty of action tonight and will be a solid addition to D.J. Foster in the ASU backfield this season. Ballage punched the clock tonight with 12 carries for 36 hard earned yards.
10 – Last but not least, Obafemi Oso lead the dance party in the front row of the ASU student section.
