Bercovici eased everyone’s concerns when he confirmed his commitment to ASU.

Tempe, AZ – The future for Sun Devil Quarterbacks in rotation at ASU is starting to fall into place.

Taylor Kelly surprised everyone but himself by beating out Mike Bercovici and Michael Eubank for the starting quarterback spot in 2012. With TK at the helm, ASU amassed 18 victories in two seasons. It also tested the patience and commitment level of Bercovici and Eubank.

This year Bercovici, who redshirted in 2012, took just 14 snaps, while also holding for extra points and field goals.

Eubank was used by OC Mike Norvell in goal line packages that had mixed reviews and inconsistent results. This past week, Eubank announced he is transferring from ASU.

This didn’t come as a surprise. For some time, it was expected that one of the two back-up quarterbacks would make that move in order to earn more playing time with a program in need. Eubank’s decision was likely a move that will benefit both parties in the long run.

Immediately following Eubank’s announcement, Bercovici eased everyone’s concerns when he confirmed his commitment to ASU. Bercovici has bled maroon and gold since his recruitment and has been vocal and passionate about being a Sun Devil.

ASU’s Class of 2014 has been led by 4-star quarterback, Manny Wilkins. Wilkins, a dual-threat QB, possesses all the skills to be successful in the Sun Devil offense with a strong arm, quickness and most importantly, tremendous leadership qualities.

However, ASU needed to find one more prospect to fill the QB slot vacated by Eubank.

Enter Coltin Gerhart, younger brother to Toby (Stanford) and Garth (ASU). Gerhart is a multi-talented athlete that excels on both sides of the ball. He was recruited to Tempe as a safety, but after recent conversations between Gerhart and ASU, he will fill the Devils’ open quarterback spot. Gerhart runs a read-option offense in high school similar to ASU. Watch his film, and you can see that Mike Norvell’s system fits him well and he has some similarities to Taylor Kelly. Here’s Coltin Gerhart’s Highlights

It is Wilkin’s desire to redshirt as a freshman. ASU would ideally redshirt Gerhart as well. So as it stands now, Bercovici will be ASU’s signal caller in 2015 after Taylor Kelly graduates. “Berco” has above average arm strength, confidence and solid leadership skills. He also proved many people wrong this year about his mobility, running the ball 10 times for 46 yards.

With some adjustments by Norvell to the cater to his strengths, Bercovici can be an effective quarterback. However, we just haven’t seen enough of him on game days to make much more of a determination.

Either Wilkins or Gerhart will earn the top spot amongst the Sun Devil Quarterbacks in 2016.
