Great things are happening with ASU Baseball, a program with a rich history that few schools in the country can rival.

An organized effort by students to showcase their support at Phoenix Muni could supercharge the atmosphere and introduce a new era of ASU Baseball.

These past few seasons we’ve seen Sun Devil students show up in record numbers at football games. At basketball games, the student section’s 942 Crew has earned some national publicity with their “Curtain of Distraction.”

Because of it’s pace, baseball is certainly a bit different than football or basketball. But with 1,000 more seats available at Phoenix Muni, there is no reason why the students cannot bring some of that same energy to ASU Baseball games.

We talked with Bill Kennedy, Associate AD who oversees Sun Devil Athletics’ student initiatives, about if and when ASU undergrads might get involved with the baseball program.

“We have found success in the past with focusing on sports as to where they are in their schedule.” he said. “Pac-12 play tends to resonate with our students, so we see larger crowds in Volleyball, Soccer, Men’s and Women’s Basketball when conference play begins.” 

Kennedy noted, “Being a new venue, we want to see what develops organically as students go out to the early games and work on enhancing that. Then after the Basketball seasons finish (the week before Spring Break) and students return from spring break, it is a great time to get them excited about Baseball and Softball.”

The Inferno Section is already in place at Phoenix Muni

Bill Kennedy made it clear, “The students are committed to making Phoenix Muni a tough environment to play in and creating a home field advantage like we see in Football and Wells Fargo Arena. Several members of the 942 Crew executive board are heading to opening day with friends.”

An added game day element like this at ASU Baseball games would send a clear message to opponents: Escaping Sun Devil Country with a win just became even more difficult.

It could also propel ASU Baseball back home, on top of the College Baseball World.
