Demario Richard broke off a 46-yard dandy to notch his first Sun Devil six.
Jaelen Strong Is Still #TooStrong For Just About Any College Defensive Back
On the first drive of the second half, Taylor Kelly lofted a 24-yard toss towards the outstretched reach of Jaelen Strong. Strong, with the forearm strength of Popeye the Sailor Man, plucked Kelly’s pass out of the sky like he was using Danielson’s chopsticks (Karate Kid reference!). At this point, I’m convinced Strong is at least part vacuum, part tree frog.
The fact remains, number 21 is #TooStrong for just about any defense on earth. Tweet #TooStrong after a sweet Jaelen catch to let the Die Hard Devils know something strong just went down.
Every Opponent Is Not Weber State
While ASU came out firing against the Lobos, New Mexico didn’t roll over and fold like the Wildcats did last week. Arizona State’s schedule is full of worthy opponents, and it was good to see ASU excel against one of the weaker teams they’ll face in regular season play.
The Lobos even exposed some weaknesses in the Arizona State secondary, mainly their inconsistency in pass defense. Although the Sun Devils were able to stall the triple option, they struggled to stop New Mexico quarterback Lamar Jordan when he decided to throw. Jordan was 7-11 for 130 yards and a TD.
Zane Gonzalez Was Invited to New Mexico’s Block Party
If ASU is going to go far this season, they will need to do all the little things well. This includes kicking extra points. ASU had two blocked extra points, and one was returned by the Lobos for a defensive PAT. Gonzalez was a weapon for the Devils last year, so hopefully ASU can wield him in a similar fashion this year.
Bison burgers anyone?
ASU’s Going To Be Pretty Fresh This Year
Last week, redshirt freshman Ellis Jefferson scored his first college touchdown. This week, it was true freshman Demario Richard’s turn to get his. Richard broke off a 46-yard dandy to notch his first Sun Devil six. ASU is leaning heavily on young talent this year, and so far the results have been positive. Credit coach Todd Graham and his staff for the heavy depth on this year’s roster.
De’Marieya Nelson CAN THROW and Zane Gonzalez CAN CATCH!
Who saw that coming? Where did it come from? Was it stolen from an intergalactic playbook previously only available to Chip Kelly? Is De’Marieya Nelson left-handed? Ambidextrous? A ninja? Who knew Zane Gonzalez had a killer Jaelen Strong impression? Did that really work? Will Zane Gonzalez be a part of five-wide packages now? Is Michael Bercovici mad I didn’t include him in that headline? Can we run it up 40 against U of A?
Obviously, that bit of two-point magic left me with more questions than answers, but this I know: That was the best pair of hands seen at the kicker position since OchoCinco took that extra point in preseason that one time.
Next week, it’s the University of Colorado Buffaloes. Bison burgers anyone?
