Phoenix Muni gives the program a Major League quality facility.
After the 2014 season, ASU Baseball shifted the leadership of the program from Coach Tim Esmay to Tracy Smith, whom Athletic Director Ray Anderson lured away from the Indiana Hoosiers.
Smith is just the 5th head coach in program history. For the record, Smith does not like to be called “coach.” Let’s take a cue from his twitter handle, @ASUSkip, and just go with “Skip.” You can also follow Tracy Smith on Instagram at tracysmithasu13.
Aside from a new coaching staff for just the fourth time in program history, ASU Baseball home games will now be played at Phoenix Municipal Stadium, which was most recently the Spring Training home of the Oakland A’s.
In total, ASU played 1,430 games at Packard Stadium including 1,122 Sun Devil wins.
The university could only upgrade Packard so much. The move to Phoenix Muni will increase fan capacity by about 1,000 seats, and give the program a Major League quality facility, something that Packard simply couldn’t provide.
ASU Baseball has produced All-Americans, Conference Players of the Year, Golden Spikes Award winners, draft picks, future Major Leaguers, Conference Titles, and National Championships. In fact, the program has sustained a higher level of success over several decades than Sun Devil Football (comparing apples and oranges, of course).
Like virtually all NCAA Power Conference universities, ASU’s Football program draws the most support and broadest following of fans and alumni. It also generates far more revenue than the other Sun Devil sports.
With that being said, right now we have a fresh opportunity to bolster the support and enthusiasm around our boys of summer.
What’s next with ASU Baseball? Stay tuned my Devil. Stay tuned.
