Copper, white, and grey are firmly a part of the color scheme for ASU Athletics.
How did we get here?
It fueled a progression of the alternate color uniform movement
It all started with the huge victory against Notre Dame at Sun Devil Stadium in 2014. It was Salute to Service weekend, and ASU Football debuted their new, outside-the-box, anthracite grey uniforms with white and copper accents.
They also added a slick and shiny copper facemask to the clean white helmet to take things to another level on the style meter. The infusion of copper was a nod to the state color of Arizona.
The Sun Devils looked sharp that day as they took down the Irish 55-38 to move into the top ten national rankings.
The look was called Desert Fuel, and true to its name, it fueled a progression of the alternate color uniform movement for ASU.
ASU’s 3-Stripe life continued its evolution, opening the following 2015 season with Adidas’ debut of the Desert Ice concept which took the whiteout concept by storm. It also featured the copper accents on the pitchfork, facemask, and numbers, solidifying the State Pride trend for future games on the schedule.
Next was a big win at UCLA with the Sun Devils adding some pieces from the new Desert Hammer uniform. The combo featured a grey helmet/copper fork and facemask, white Desert Ice jersey and grey pants with a big copper fork.
It was an extreme, bold look that was endorsed by many ASU players, including Demario Richard, who ultimately made the uniform choice for that 38-23 win against the #7 ranked Bruins. The color combo also gave RB Kalen Ballage superpowers to drag half of the UCLA defense 20 yards into the end zone to ice the game.
Finally, ASU featured an all-out, “all grey everything” Desert Hammer look with copper accents in the 2015 Territorial Cup. State Pride (and dominance) was on display when the Devils earned the big 52-37 win wearing the new duds. The Cup came back home that day.
Now here we are in 2016, and the copper, grey, and white colors are still making their mark on ASU Football.
For the UCLA game this Saturday, Sun Devil Equipment has worked their “mix and match” magic again. The newest combo features strong components of the Desert Ice and Desert Hammer uniforms.
Let’s call it the Ice Hammer look
White helmet, big copper fork with shiny copper facemask. Grey jersey with copper numbers and white pants with an oversized copper pitchfork.
Another solid ASU uniform combo for this huge game that will have a big impact on the Pac-12 South race in 2016.
One more thing, fans wear GOLD.
Helmet prep each week takes even longer when we have to do a complete overhaul of the color we just wore. @Silva_Era_1 building 1 of the 105 pic.twitter.com/X25G4c0CRn
