I wanted to share an experience that I had on Sunday (July 21, 2013) with several other ASU alumni in New York City.

The PAC-12 Networks decided to shoot an on-location commercial in the City and needed representatives from each school. The shoot was spread out around the Big Apple, and each location consisted of two schools based on geographic location.
The Arizona schools shot on 5th Ave right across from The Plaza on 59th St and 5th Ave. Naturally, there was not much interaction between ASU of U of A before and after the shoot. Fourteen Sun Devils from the city came together decked out in maroon and gold. We all rocked ASU sun glasses too.

As a group they had us say, “We’re the New York Sun Devils and you’re watching the PAC-12 Networks. Fork ’em Devils!” and “We’re the New York Sun Devils and you’re watching the PAC-12 Arizona Network. Fork ’em Devils!” followed by us going wild, as if Marion Grice just took one 60 yards to the house. We were also filmed doing the classic “LET’S GO DEVILS” chant.

After the shoot, they chose two of us (me and our chapter president Josh Cohen) to do an individual interview discussing why we went to ASU, what life is like in New York City compared to Tempe and our game-watching events.

They asked if there was any interaction between members of Sun Devil Nation when wearing maroon and gold around the city.

If you have ever been to New York City, you may have noticed that most of the people here wear ear buds wherever they go. I told them that one of the amazing things about being a Sun Devil is that you don’t even need words to communicate; people will always throw up the fork when they see fellow Devils walking by.

Another cool part of the day is that ASU Alum, QB Steven Threet, joined us. I’m pretty sure we will be the only school in that commercial with a former player involved. To make the day even better, the background for our shoot was The Plaza, while the background for U of A was a hot dog stand. On top of that, they actually got yelled at by businesses and residents of the building that they were shooting in front of.

In the short hour and half that we were there, we heard three separate “Go Devils” shout-outs from other DieHard Sun Devils that happened to be walking by. One group even shouted out of a passing cab.

This was an awesome experience and just another way to prove that Sun Devil Nation is out in full force everywhere throughout the country. I am not sure what parts will be used in the commercials or exactly when it will go live, but keep a lookout for the New York Sun Devils representing ASU on the PAC-12 Network soon.

GO DEVILS!
