Pullman, WA – ASU Football made a loud statement on Halloween night in Pullman. They came out of the gates quick to take command of the game with an early lead, then put the nail in the coffin during the third quarter, beating Washington State 55-21.
First Quarter
The Sun Devils didn’t waste any time making a strong impression as Taylor Kelly drove the offense down the field and scored on a zone option read play to put ASU up 7-0. Kelly also added the second Sun Devil score on another quarterback keeper, getting ASU off to a quick start and early lead. Kelly added one more score in the quarter on a beautiful, wide open slant pass to Jaelen Strong to increase the ASU lead to 21-0.
Devils 21 – Cougars 0
Second Quarter
The Cougars got on the scoreboard early in the second quarter on a 34 yard TD pass, to cut the ASU lead to 21-7. The Sun Devils responded with a 7 yard score on a screen pass to D.J. Foster. On the next ASU possession, Kelly hit Rick Smith on a 51 yard TD pass that Smith bobbled, then tipped back to himself to walk into the end-zone for the score.
Following the extra point, the Devils were in complete control, leading 35-7. ASU tacked on one more score in the first half on an 8 yard TD pass to Chris Coyle, his fourth through the air to go along with two on the ground.
Wazzu found the end-zone again on a 15 yard TD pass before the half.
Halftime: Devils 42 – Cougars 14
Third Quarter
ASU received the second half kickoff, but were held in check by the Cougar defense on their first possession. Wazzu took advantage and marched down for another score to cut the ASU lead to 42-21 and make the game interesting again.
The Sun Devils responded immediately with a 23 yard scoring strike to DJ Foster, his second TD of the night. ASU led 49-21 at the end of the third quarter.
Devils 49 – Cougars 21
Fourth Quarter
ASU pulled the reigns back on the offense in the final quarter and hit the cruise control button with two field goals by Zane Gonzalez, driving the final score to 55-21.
With their sixth victory on the season, ASU is now bowl eligible, but they still have plenty of work to do to get to the Pac-12 Championship game starting next week against Utah.
