Today, we take a moment to honor the men and women in the United States Military who have sacrificed their lives to protect our freedom. We proudly say “Thank You” from a grateful Sun Devil Nation.

It’s time to remember all the American soldiers that have fought for our freedom and paid the ultimate price so we can enjoy the simple every day pleasures in our country that sometimes we might take for granted. Simple freedoms like choosing to be a Sun Devil, wearing maroon and gold, tailgating before a game with family and friends and watching football at Sun Devil Stadium. Because of that, we are a grateful Sun Devil Nation.

From Bill Kajikawa to Pat Tillman, Sun Devils have a long and proud history with the military and service to our country.  ASU currently has 7,671 living degreed alumni with a military affiliation. In addition, the ASU Alumni Association has 1,361 non-degree members with a military affiliation (source: ASU Media Relations).

Coach Todd Graham has made it a point to embrace the military past and present of ASU, by having current player and veteran Jake Sheffield lead the team out of Tillman Tunnel before every home game carrying the American flag. Graham also introduced the #42 Pat Tillman practice jersey to honor Pat and his military service. During the spring football game, Graham traded hats with a veteran who tossed him his camoflague military hat from the stands. The head coach wore the hat with call sign “Sun Devil 6” for the entire spring scrimmage.

So fellow Sun Devils, as you barbeque and sip on a few cold beers today, remember those who died protecting our country and all the freedoms that go along with being an American. We are a grateful Sun Devil Nation.

“The reason we enjoy our lives as Americans is due to the sacrifices made by those who have fought for this country. It’s because of those men and women that we can enjoy barbecues, sports events, family time and vacations. It’s because of their service that we can have opinions that differ, politics that differ and take positions on issues without having to fear reprisal or bloodshed. The privilege of our freedoms comes with a price and for many of our soldiers it cost the ultimate price. Take a moment today to acknowledge those who gave to us without thinking of themselves. In honor of our men and women in the Armed Forces who gave their lives for us; THANK YOU! GOD BLESS AMERICA!” –ASU Football All-American Juan Roque
