TEMPE, AZ – Instant Victory Report: ASU 53 – #20 Washington 24
It was a fine day.
In a must-win game for both opponents today, the Maroon & Gold put on a show in the House of Heat. ASU’s Offense and Defense executed what were very effective strategies by Coach Graham & his staff.
In the coming days, we’ll break this one down in more detail because there was a lot for fans to take away from ASU’s performance.
Here’s the immediate Game Report for your review.
Q1
Although it was an Arizona State Homecoming, the Husky fans in attendance were barking loud when their team got off to a fast start. The Sun Devils received the kick-off but punted on their first possession. Then the Huskies marched right down the field and scored on star RB Bishop Sankey’s 1 yard Touchdown run.
The Devils were able to shore up their defense on the next possessions but only managed three points of their own to end the quarter. Washington 7 – ASU 3
Q2
The second quarter was arguably the Devils’ best this year. Not only did they shut down the Husky offense, keeping them scoreless, but ASU unleashed a fury of offense to put 26 more points on the board. The only miscue was a blocked extra point after a Marion Grice touchdown.
The momentum swung in ASU’s favor so much so that on their only punt, the Devils snagged the ball away from the Husky’s punt returner when he mishandled the kick. Even though they settled for two field goals at or near the red-zone, the Devils’ had control of the game going into the half. ASU 29 – Washington 7
Q3
The momentum that took ASU into the half quickly shifted to the Husky sideline as Washington scored a touchdown on their first play from scrimmage with a 70 yard touchdown pass from Keith Price to Kevin Smith.
Then the Devils retaliated with a score of their own on a Taylor Kelly 1 yard touchdown run. ASU and Washington traded field goals to close out the quarter with ASU up 22 points. ASU 39 – Washington 17
Q4
Early into the 4th quarter, the Washington defense succumbed to the heat and ASU’s 80-some plays.
The Devils began running the ball at will to ice the Win and out-scored the Huskies 14-7 in the final frame.
Final Score:
For the Sun Devils, this was a statement game to the rest of the conference and by some accounts, the nation.
ASU may find themselves back in the AP Rankings for the third time this season after overpowering the #20 Team in the country today. #ForksUp
