Tempe, AZ – Game #10 Instant Report
With only 3 games left in the regular season, the Sun Devils contest with Oregon State tonight was another important step on the road to the Pac-12 Championship game. Even with a big south division game looming in the distance with UCLA, ASU was able to stay focused on the task at hand and defeat Oregon State, 30-17 at Sun Devil Stadium.
First Quarter
The Sun Devils received the kick and didn’t waste any time on their opening drive. Taylor Kelly and Jaelen Strong hooked up early and often to get down to the one yard line, where Marion Grice took it in for the score.
During the opening quarter, Kelly uncharacteristically threw two interceptions, but the Sun Devils got one of their own by Robert Nelson Jr. After another impressive drive, including a 40 yard run by Marion Grice, DJ Foster took it up the middle for an 8 yard scoring run. After a missed extra point, ASU led 13-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Second Quarter
After a fumbled punt by Oregon State, the Sun Devils took over near the Beavers 20 yard line. Four plays later, ASU slammed it into the end zone with a one yard run by Grice.
The Devils led 20-0, when the Beavers put together a decent drive that included a long pass to Brandin Cooks. However, Mannion was intercepted again, this time by Damarious Randall.
Oregon State marched down the field just before the half ended and hit a short field goal with :01 left on the clock.
HALFTIME SCORE: ASU 20 – OSU 3
Third Quarter
Neither team could get much going on offense to start the second half until the Beavers put together a long, 96 yard scoring drive capped off by a 6 yard TD pass from Sean Mannion to TE Caleb Smith. That cut the ASU lead to 20-10 with just under two minutes left in the quarter. ASU went three and out on their next possession to end the third quarter.
Fourth Quarter
Down 20-10 to start the final quarter, Oregon State put together some decent drives, but had a hard time putting points on the board. ASU kicker Zane Gonzalez hit an 18 yard field goal with 5:25 left in the game to increase the Sun Devil lead to 23-10.
Robert Nelson Jr. iced the game for the Devils with another interception witch he returned 23 yards for a pick six to increase the ASU lead to 30-10. Oregon State tacked on one more score with 2:41 left, but it was too little, too late for the Beavers.
FINAL SCORE: ASU 30 – OSU 17
