The College Football Assistance Fund reports that 20,718 college football injuries happen every year.

Tempe, AZ – Football is far and away the most dangerous American sport. Every college football season, each team has to deal with their share of injuries and figure out a way to overcome adversity.

The College Football Assistance Fund reports that 20,718 college football injuries happen every year.

Of that total, knee injuries are the most common with 3,774. There are also 1,364 concussions, and those are only the ones that are officially reported.

Here’s the updated injury status of the 2013 Sun Devil team.

Jaxon Hood

Since his arrival last year, Jaxon Hood has had an immediate impact on the defensive line. Currently, he is dealing with a hamstring issue that will keep him out of the USC game, but Jaxon is expected back for Notre Dame. Like Onyeali, he is another player that will be sorely missed against USC to shut down the Trojan run game.

Junior Onyeali

Senior Junior Onyeali is out for the remainder of the 2013 season with a shoulder injury suffered against Stanford.

Senior Junior Onyeali is out for the remainder of the 2013 season with a shoulder injury suffered against Stanford. This one is a significant blow to the defensive line which has been struggling with their depth.

There is a chance that Onyeali can apply for a medical hardship and return next season. Stay tuned.

When asked about losing Onyeali for the season, teammate Carl Bradford said, “As far as Junior goes, I hate to lose him because he is a speed rusher like me, and he’s really good off the end on third downs.”

Junior will be tough to replace.

Chans Cox

Chans Cox is off to a rocky start at ASU.

First there was the fractured foot in spring ball, now the shoulder injury during fall practice. At this point, the coaching staff just wants him to stay healthy for an extended period of time.

Cox underwent surgery this week and will begin the healing process to be ready to go next season. On a positive note, it looked like he was going to red-shirt this year anyway.

AJ Latu

True freshman AJ Latu came to ASU with high expectations and was starting to see more playing time, specifically on special teams. He tweaked his ankle during a practice session and will be out for a while. Typically, it’s not a big blow losing a freshman who is contributing part-time, so Latu doesn’t have to rush back and we could see him again later in the season.

His larger twin brother, another promising freshman, Viliami Latu 6-2, 225 pounds, is likely to represent himself and his brother in 2013.

Coach Graham said yesterday that he should be back on the field in two weeks

Marcus Ball

Talented true freshman, Marcus Ball, looked like a starting safety early in fall camp, but he injured his collarbone in the Saturday scrimmage at Camp Tontozona in August.

Ball has been addressing his injury these past five weeks, and Coach Graham said yesterday that he should be back on the field in two weeks. Ball looks like a future star and will be welcomed back to the Sun Devil secondary soon.
