Tempe, AZ – A credible University of Texas recruiting site, Orangebloods.com has reported that Steve Patterson is still very much in the mix for the Texas Athletic Director position.
Current Texas AD, DeLoss Dodds will be stepping down next year.
After supposedly turning down the job 5 days ago, Patterson apparently had an interview with the Texas advisory group assisting in the AD search on Sunday. And it went very well.
Throughout the candidate review process, it was believed that Oliver Luck, the current AD for West Virginia was the solid frontrunner. And he still might be.
It sounds like Patterson had an informal conversation with a representative from the University of Texas a week ago, and the job opening was discussed. Patterson most likely wasn’t offered the position at that time, but the conversation probably hinted at the possibility. Following the initial call/meeting, Patterson told Texas he wasn’t interested and was happy at Arizona State.
Fast forward to Sunday, and representatives from Texas continued their due diligence and never gave up on the Patterson option, flying out from Texas for a formal interview. Apparently, they liked what they heard and Patterson is now one of two finalists for the job, along with Oliver Luck. A final decision will be made within a week.
It would be a big blow for ASU to lose Patterson to Texas at this point in his Sun Devil career. The football program is starting to build some real momentum and is ready to kick off the redevelopment of Sun Devil Stadium. There has also been a major cultural shift within the Athletic Department.
Here’s the other really important and relevant question… If Patterson gets the Texas job, how long before he goes after Todd Graham and his staff to run the Longhorn football program?
