Tempe, AZ – At this point in the 2013 season, there is no doubt that the Sun Devils have their eyes on the big prize, the Rose Bowl.
Sitting in a great position at 7-2 (5-1), ASU controls their own destiny to win the south and make it to the Pac-12 Championship game for most likely another match-up with Stanford in Palo Alto (we’ll put all other scenarios on the shelf for now). Win that game, and it’s off to Pasadena. If the Devils lose, the more likely scenarios include the Alamo Bowl or Holiday Bowl, with an outside chance at the Fiesta Bowl.
The Pac-12 Conference recently released the bowl projections by various media outlets for the top teams in the north and south, and here’s what they had to say about ASU.
The possible translation here has the Sun Devils beating UCLA, winning the south and making it to the Pac-12 Championship game, only to lose to Stanford. I’m sure Coach Graham and his team will have something to say about that, and they will do their talking on the field. Oregon State is their one and only focus at this time.
One other interesting note about this list is the potential match-up with Texas which would include plenty of subplots with ASU’s recently-departed AD, Steve Patterson, and Coach Graham who comes from the Lone Star state.
As expected, the media sources tabbed Oregon and Stanford to make it to the top bowls for the conference, including the Rose Bowl and Orange Bowl.
Finally, UCLA is also right in the mix and has a few scenarios similar to ASU. However, ESPN bumped them down to the Sun Bowl, which means they think ASU will essentially beat UCLA.
There is still a lot of football to be played for the Sun Devils starting with this weekend against Oregon State. ASU has done an excellent job this season at focusing on the task at hand and not looking too far ahead. The win against Utah last week was a huge stepping stone for a shot at the Pac-12’s Rose Bowl bid.
