Tempe, AZ – One thing that we have gotten used to over the years is ASU baseball hosting a regional playoff series at Packard Stadium. Most of the time, a super-regional playoff series follows and then a trip to Omaha for the College World Series. After all, the Sun Devils have been to Omaha 22 times.
Unfortunately for ASU fans, it doesn’t look like the Devils are going to host this year. With some tough losses to close out the season, the Sun Devils lost their chance at a regional playoff series at home.
As of today, the Sun Devils currently sit at fourth place in the Pac-12 standings. With most likely four slots being awarded to west coast teams, that gives the clear advantage to Oregon State, Oregon, UCLA and out of conference program Cal State Fullerton to host regional series.
Not to worry though. This is the first year the Sun Devils are off their recent probation and eligible for the postseason play, so ASU will be happy to be back in the mix with a shot at Omaha. Also, if this team gets hot at the right time, they could do some damage and end up as one of the final eight teams at the College World Series.
But first things first. Following the season ending series this weekend against the Washington Huskies, the regional hosts and sites will be announced on May 26th at 6 PM (PT). The field will include 64 teams, including 30 automatic qualifiers and 16 seeded teams.
All regional games are double elimination and will be played from May 31st through June 4th, followed by the Super Regional games (best of three series) from June 7th-10th.
The College World Series in Omaha begins June 15th through June 26th on ESPN.
The Sun Devils are currently ranked anywhere between #13 and #21 in the various national polls, but here is a snapshot below of the Top 25 teams in the nation.
