Coveted 4-star recruit & prior USC commit, Derik DJ Calhoun, committed to the Sun Devils on Friday. News just went public today because he didn’t want it to be a distraction to his team (El Cerrito High School in northern CA) and their game Friday night.

Calhoun is a senior at El Cerrito High School, CA

Calhoun, a ferocious 6’1” 205 Linebacker, was recruited by Sun Devil coaches, Chris Ball and Paul Randolph.

Calhoun is very good friends with receiver Jalen Harvey, who committed to the Devils just nine days ago. The two visted Tempe together last Saturday for the Devils’ contest with Washington. In the past, Jalen has said that Calhoun is like family to him and would love to play with him at the next level.

2014 Sun Devil QB commit Manny Wilkins, who has been making a name for himself as a strong ambassador of ASU, was “in the ear” of both Calhoun and Harvey. Wilkins if from Northern California as well.

“Manny is just a great dude,” Calhoun told Hod Rabino of DevilsDigest.com. “He’s the type of guy you want to play with. He’s really been recruiting us hard and telling us why it’s a great fit (at ASU). Just to have another guy you know like that, and how he’s a leader would be that much better.” “The (ASU) fans blew my mind away. I love the coaches, all of the coaches. I had a good vibe with the players…. Overall, it’s probably the best visit I’ve had to any school.”

Recently Calhoun was invited to play in the prestigious U.S. Army All-American Bowl

The weekend of his visit, Senior S Alden Darby hosted Calhoun, and the two spent most of the weekend together. Darby left his mark on Calhoun as well, and Calhoun has said as much.

Last year as a junior, Calhoun collected several accolades:

  • League Defensive Player of the Year
  • Unanimous First Team All-League
  • First Team All-East Bay
  • All-Metro by the San Francisco Chronicle.
  • Named Second Team All-Northern California by CalHiSports

Recently Calhoun was invited to play in the prestigious U.S. Army All-American Bowl, which is the premier high school all-star football game held annually in January in San Antonio, Texas.

Today, Chris Karpman of ASUDevils.com asked Calhoun if he was planning on visiting other schools.

Calhoun replied, “No, I’m done,” he told Karpman. “I’m going to ASU.”
