Seattle, WA – Freshman phenom Jahii Carson scored a season high 32 points on Saturday night, but a lack of strong play in the paint doomed the Sun Devils as they lose to the Washington Huskies, 96-92. ASU (17-5 / 6-3 Pac-12) was battling early just to keep the score close after the Huskies (13-9 / 5-4 Pac-12) got off to a fast start and Carrick Felix picked up three quick fouls in the first half.

ASU trailed by at least 10 points for most of the game, and every time they would make a run, the Huskies would answer and keep the Sun Devils in the distance. With Felix in foul trouble, Jonathan Gilling did his part for ASU hitting multiple 3 pointers and finishing the game with 22 points. The final numbers didn’t seem to add up at ASU shot 63.8% from the field, and Washington finished at 52.9%.
The big difference was in the paint. Jordan Bachynski had trouble defending the athletic Huskies inside, and he couldn’t get much going offensively. It was a good example of how this Sun Devil team needs to have everyone clicking on all cylinders in order to beat the top teams in the conference.
Even with all the adversity they faced throughout the game, ASU showed some fight, added some excitement and made a final push at the end to make it close. Carson put the Sun Devils on his back and almost willed the team to a win, scoring on penetrating drives and a running 3 pointer to put a possible victory within reach. But in the end, the Devils couldn’t close the deal and finished the road trip to Washington winning one out of two. Next up, ASU faces Cal at home on Thursday, February 7th.
